OpenOffice.org has released the 2.1 version of the popular open source multiplatform office suite. The new version has support 64-bit linux and a number of improvements – like multiple monitor support for Impress, improved Calc HTML export and automatic notification of updates.

Recording screencasts in Linux was a difficult problem faced by many users. recordmyDesktop is a command line tool to record screencasts and it has a GTK and a qt based frontend to make it easy for newbies. RecordMyDesktop can be tweaked to your hearts content by changing the sound and video quality, frames captured per second, mouse cursor style, compression, and whether to record the current window or the entire desktop.

Ubuntu users can install recordMyDesktop and gtk-recordMyDesktop with:

Google has brought another app over to linux. Google Desktop which is brings the power of Google search to your personal files, is now available for linux. It is really nice to see that it doesn’t run on a emulated layer(wine) like picasa or maps instead requires glibc 2.3.2+, gtk+ 2.2.0+.

Google Desktop for linux has various features like:

Quick Search box: Just press ctrl twice and you get the quick search box.
Search your Gmail and web history: Allows you to search your email and history even if you are offline as the index is stored on your computer
Many file types: Searches your Gmail, text, source code, PDF, postscript, html, Thunderbird mail, OO.o documents, images, music, man and info pages, files and folder names. Phew!
Familiar results: The search result is same as your regular Google search result

Google integration: If you search for something on the web, it will show related information present on your harddisk too

Xfce the light-weight desktop environment and the latest version 4.4 was released two days back. It has been a favorite desktop for many users and the latest version has numerous features like Desktop icons, File Manager, text editor, removable drives or media.

Desktop Icons

One of the most often requested features during the 4.0 and 4.2 was support for icons on the desktop. Now, with Xfce 4.4.0, this feature was finally added to the desktop manager Xfdesktop.

The desktop manager utilizes Thunar’s libraries to handle application launchers and regular files/folders on the desktop. The desktop manager is also able to display icons for minimized windows on the desktop, which is quite a popular feature from the CDE world. Of course, you can disable the desktop icons altogether if you prefer a clean desktop.

Removable Drives and Media

Xfce 4.4.0 provides easy access to data on removable drives and media. Just insert the media into the drive or plug the new drive in to the computer and an icon representing the removable volume will appear on the desktop and in Thunar’s side pane.

Autostart

Xfce 4.4.0 implements the new Autostart Specification – actually Xfce was the first desktop to implement said feature, but the others were faster to release.

The specification consists of two parts, the Autostart of Applications During Startup, which is implemented in xfce4-session and the Autostart Of Applications After Mount which is implemented in thunar-volman. This release also includes the xfce4-autostart-editor, shown in the screenshot above, which allows users to easily add, remove or disable autostarted applications.
